A THREE HOUR STROLL THROUGH WORLD HERITAGE
Tarraco was founded by the Romans 217 BC as a temporary military camp during the 2nd Punic War. But news spread about the nearby idyllic wine country, and it grew into the capital of the largest province of the Roman Empire. In the 12thC, after the Reconquesta, it transformed into Tarragona, a charming medieval harbour town scattered with reminders of its monumental past, today a World Heritage Site.
This 3 hour tour is hence all about recycling and transformation: a Roman wall into a bishop’s palace… a forum into a convent… an Augustus temple into a Gothic cathedral… tomb stones into Visigoth housing… an amphitheatre into a Romanesque church… amongst others. We will also have the chance to climb the magnificent cathedral’s bell tower to get a bird’s eye perspective of present day Tarragona embraced by all this heritage.
