A 2 HOUR STROLL THROUGH MEDIEVAL BARCELONA
Barcelona is the Gothic city par excellence in Europe. Most of the splendid monuments were built between the 11th and 14th Century, when practically the whole of the Mediterranean was under her domain. The first settlers landed here in 18 BC and founded Barcino, a small Roman sea side resort for retired officers. In 1859, with the new Eixample (Expansion) district, the medieval walls were pulled down, and what had been the city for over two thousand years automatically became Ciutat Vella (The Old City).
This tour is a 2 hour stroll through its oldest neighbourhood, Barri Gotic, with its historical squares, Gothic cathedral, churches and palaces, and El Call (the medieval Jewish quarter) up to the highest point of Barcino with its Augustus temple. Wars, pests, crises and booms transformed it over hundreds of years and, thanks to the more recent urban renewal program in the eighties, it has now recovered the social dynamism that once characterized it.
